NEW SINGLE – TOMALIA DESCRIBES THE REALITY OF A ‘MODERN ROMANCE’

Melbourne based artist Tomalia has released her sassy and sexy second single, ‘Modern Romance’ which voices her experience as a young woman in the sometimes-insane dating scene.

“Modern Romance is about when you fall for somebody and they step on you and squish you down. But instead of letting them hurt you, why not step back onto them? I want listeners to be a bit afraid as they take a look at the crazy world that is modern dating from my perspective. Falling in love has never been a more unstable time, and I want my audience to feel that along with the irony of how wonderfully ugly modern romance can be.” - Tomalia

Following the release of her debut single, ‘Coca Cola,’ Tomalia has been gigging around town with her female/non- binary band that has allowed her to create and express her femininity for her fans.

‘Modern Romance’ builds from the feminine persona of her act by describing the modern idea of the ‘situationship’. Through groovy basslines and tingling drums, the track is very much jazz inspired, making you feel like you’re sitting in a dive bar sipping on a drink.

The jazz notes on this track are the most promising aspects of the song’s development with a groove that suits Tomalia’s bold voice and tone. Known for her comedic prowess and unique songwriting abilities, the song takes an abrupt turn stylistically halfway through. From the beautiful electronic keys to heavy rock guitars, this dramatic change demonstrates the up and downs of a situationship as she exclaims, “Oh isn’t romance so fun?!” Showing that she is not shy to speak in front of the mic, this song demonstrates her confidence and self-assured image that brings a new level of boss-babe to the song.

Overall, this track is a great piece of experimentation with art-pop and jazz that shines a light on the realities of dating in the modern world. We look forward to seeing more of what Tomalia has in store!

Modern Romance is now available to listen to on all digital streaming platforms including our brand new playlist, ‘2023, I’m Free!’ She will also be launching the new single at the Tote Upstairs on 11th August with her “smoking hot femme/non binary band.”
